Thank you for your interest in Easton Hospital’s Internal Medicine Residency program. Our residency is located in a university-affiliated, community-based hospital located in the Lehigh Valley of eastern Pennsylvania, a region rich in historical traditions and close to the New York and Philadelphia metropolitan areas. We are a major teaching hospital for Drexel University and our residents teach their medical students as they rotate through our teaching services.
Our program is small enough to treat each resident individually, yet large enough to provide a patient base and teaching faculty that will prepare each resident to successfully make the next step in their professional career, whether that is the practice of general internal medicine or progression to fellowship training.
Our residency program is designed to train fully competent, broadly skilled general internists. We are patient-centered and primary care oriented. We believe that each resident is an individual, with individual strengths, and are prepared to tailor instruction to meet individual needs. We value cultural diversity.
Over 80 general internists and subspecialists form our teaching faculty. Core faculty members all have a major commitment to teaching; our volunteer teaching faculty are successful private internists and subspecialists. Faculty members teach in their own office settings as well as in the hospital.
Our curriculum is structured to provide each resident a series of learning opportunities in both inpatient and ambulatory teaching venues, following the competency-based curriculum guidelines developed by the Federated Council of Internal Medicine. We seek a balance in the amount of time a resident devotes to supervised clinical experience, teaching rounds, didactic lectures and personal study. Each resident is expected to demonstrate scholarly activity by presenting case conferences and conducting a required research project. We follow all ACGME guidelines relating to working hours and patient volumes.
Our philosophy is to establish and maintain a learning environment in which residents approach the study and practice of internal medicine with diligence and enthusiasm. We believe that each resident must teach as he/she learns, for by teaching we learn best. We hold in value each resident's personality equal to his/her intellect, for medicine is a team effort where we must all learn to work symbiotically in an atmosphere that rewards collaboration above competition.
We understand that each resident entering our program has placed a great deal of trust in our ability to provide a quality educational experience in the science and art of internal medicine. Every resident applying him/herself fully to the established requirements of the program should anticipate board certification, as well as to be competitive in seeking a clinical practice or fellowship training. Our success is confirmed by our residents’ 94% pass rate for the past seven years and 97% for the past 10 years on the ABIM certifying examination.
Residency training at Easton Hospital will be intense, never demeaning and focused foremost on our patients' welfare. It will also be fun! We invite you to visit us and talk to our residents to learn first hand about their experiences at Easton Hospital.
