Our Goal At Easton Hospital our philosophy is to treat Residents more as students rather than employees. We will strive to provide an atmosphere that is conducive for learning while helping you to reach all the goals and objectives for the specialty of surgery. In return we expect dedication, hard work, honesty and maintenance of the highest surgical standards from our Residents. As a hospital family, our mutual aim is to provide you with the best education that will help you to complete your surgical training and to mold you into a caring, ethical physician who will fulfill the duty of his or her profession to society and uphold the high moral standards of our profession.
About Our Program
This approved five-year training program in General Surgery participates in the National Resident Matching Program and accepts and graduates two surgical residents each year. Two pre-speciality residents and one designated preliminary are accepted annually for one or two years of surgical training.
We are proud to report Easton Hospital's Surgical Residency Program recently received a full five-year accreditation with no citations from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) in Chicago. The inspection took place in November of 2001. The program has now been fully accredited since 1996 until 2006 with no citations.
Easton Hospital also offers training in orthopaedics, cardiothoracics, urology, gynecology, plastics, vascular surgery, and endoscopy; you will operate on and care for patients on these services with approximately 19,000 surgical procedures performed at Easton Hospital each year.
In addition to your training at Easton Hospital, you will have rotations at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia and Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. Third and fourth-year medical students from Drexel University School of Medicine (formerly MCP Hahnemann School of Medicine) rotate through Easton Hospital and work closely with surgical residents, providing added stimulation and challenge..

The close relationship between residents and attendings and the compact physical size of the Hospital afford you a supervised, graded responsibility at an earlier level than you would experience in some institutions.
Surgical conferences are given priority when your schedule is planned. You will benefit from conferences that include visiting professors of national renown, as well as lectures presented by peers. Major didactic conferences are also a part of the schedule.
Other conferences in cardiology, gastroenterology, endocrinology, nephrology, neurosurgery, orthopedics, urology, and a basic science lecture series are rotated over a two-year period. Various rounds, such as vascular, bedside, and chief residents, are part of the regular schedule. A systematic review of recent surgical papers will familiarize you with the broad spectrum of your field.
During your Chief year, you will perform approximately 300 cases with a total recording of over 1,000 cases by the end of your residency. You will begin operating at the first-year level and will progress according to your abilities.
Our program also builds in the vital aspect of continuity through pre-operative and post-operative care. You will experience a continuum of care with patients through one of three sources: the surgical clinic, held weekly at Easton Hospital; the extended care facility; and a program providing pre- and post-operative training in private physician offices in all years of training.
