Easton, PA – Feb. 2, 2016 – Easton Hospital has announced the addition of a Palliative Care program to its list of services.
Palliative Care provides specialized medical care for people of any age during any stage of serious or chronic illness. It is provided together with curative treatment and focuses on relieving the symptoms and stress of the illness.
“The goal of Palliative Care is to improve quality of life for both the patient and the family,” said Karen Vadyak, chief nursing officer at Easton Hospital. “Our Palliative Care service will be coordinating and communicating closely with the patients’ care providers.”
“We work closely with the patient’s primary physician to understand the patient’s medical diagnosis and prognosis and to align the treatment goals with the patient’s values and preferences,” said Chand Rohatgi, M.D., medical director. “Palliative Care specialists do not replace the patient’s doctor; rather, we partner with the patient, his or her family and other healthcare providers to control symptoms and help patients understand their treatment options so that they can formulate their goals.”
Palliative Care consultations also focus on management of symptoms such as pain or shortness of breath. It can help patients gain the strength to carry on with daily activities and improve their ability to tolerate medical treatments.
Palliative Care consultations are covered by Medicare and most private insurance companies.
